Introducing New Staff & a New Project

Antidote this year was selected as one of 65 successful organizations (among more than 300 who submitted proposals) to receive Status of Women Canada Blueprint Funding.

Antidote’s SWC project work will carry forward on the theme:

“Engaging Youth in the Prevention of Violence Against Girls and Women”

Welcome, Blueprint Project Staff!

It is therefore Antidote’s great pleasure to introduce our new Blueprint Project staff members:
Ainjil Hunt, Project Coordinator and Carol Bilson, Project Assistant

They each bring a wealth and depth of experience from their work, their studies and their life experiences.

Ainjil Hunt
As a Principal in Transformation Consulting, Ainjil Hunt strives for
Social, Economic and Community Development through business and social change. Ainjil’s holds from the University of Victoria holds BSW, Administration in Aboriginal Governance, Diploma in Public Sector Management and is a Masters candidate in Social Work Policy and Practice.

Ainjil is internationally certified and experienced in Huna, Cross-Cultural Training and Facilitation among numerous other skills and achievements in coaching, violence prevention and social work.

Carol Bilson has a BA, University of Calgary- Political Science and MA, University of Victoria- Indigenous Governance.

Carol has trained and motivated a team of student ambassadors to successfully facilitate in First Nation communities all over Blackfoot, Cree, and Dene Territory. She is a model in diplomacy, tactful and constructive communication and is effective in oral and written mediums. Carol has a range of experience working together with youth, girls, young women and elders always providing leadership in building community and effecting change through a critical analysis framework.

Both Carol and Ainjil were introduced at the September BOD meeting and have begun their work with the Project Advisory/Working Group. They will be planning a series of working group meetings, antidote consultations, Board and community events.

Please watch for their posts and prepare to get involved. We look forward to everyone’s input and energy for the work ahead.

Learn an instrument! Write a Song! Form a Band! All in ONE weekend!

Community event! Antidote’s president-elect, Soumya Natarajan, is organizing a Feminists’ Rock Camp! It’s for all adults (over 19) of all genders and all music ability. There’s no need to identify as a feminist, if you prefer a different label or wish to question labels all together. However, this camp is for those open to feminist process and committed to creating a safer space during the event.

If you have an instrument please bring it! If you have more than one and want to share, awesome! No worries if you don’t though, instruments will be provided as well. The fee covers accommodation, meals, instruction, supplies, practice, gig and a whole lot of encouragement, guidance and support to unleash your inner rockstar!

Transportation shouldn’t be a concern! There will be carpools available and encouraged. The dates are August 20-22 at Camp Pringle and registration fee is a sliding scale $50-200. That’s right people! Saturday August 7th is the date for the sale and we are asking for donations of household items, clothing, etc. Whatever does not sell will be donated to a local charity.

Sistah’s go to the Canoe Club!

Sistah’s and sistah’s at heart! We are going to the canoe club for some 1/2 price glasses of wine at 7:30pm on Tuesday July 6th. Even if you have never been to our events, (or don’t drink wine!) they are a lot of fun and great way to get to know some other rad women in our community!
We will have a table under “antidote” and Mel and I will be there for sure! See you tommorrow!!

Thanks for making unlabel 2010 a success

The 4th unlabel fashion happened on Sunday March 21st. We had a great time de-constructing fashion, discussing important issues that face us and of course, re-creating clothing!

This year we had several interactive workshops which included: brooch making, sewing, an interactive media station, and an informative workshop in which we deconstructed popular images found in print media. And we finished with a speak out runway, in which everyone had the opportunity to share what they re-created and anything they learned that day before strutting down the runway. What an empowering way to end a fantastic day with our antidote family!

Sistahs: potluck and clothing exchange

Calling all Sistas!! Pot luck and clothing exchange (and meet antidote’s new community coordinator!)!!

Tuesday February 9th in the Women’s Centre in the Student Union building at Uvic (SUB B107) at UVIC. 6pm!

Please bring an item of food to share for the pot luck dinner.

The clothing swap is a great opportunity to shed some of those lovely items of clothing that you never seem to wear, taking up precious room in your closet. In exchange you may gain an entire new wardrobe without spending a dime! We will have a free for all swap. All clothing and accessories (shoes, jewelry, purses etc.) are welcome! and anything not exchanged will be donated to a local charity.
