Free Community Class: Anthropology and Indigenous Peoples in Canada

Anthropology and Indigenous Peoples in Canada
Marc Pinkoski

This 5-week course is designed from a set of classes I have recently taught at UVic. I have two purposes for offering it: The first is to introduce students to the discipline of anthropology and the second is to show the relationship of anthropology to Indigenous Peoples and the history of Canada. My objective is to answer the calls of many students to make this information more accessible. I also hope that offering classes in this manner may assist those who feel alienated from some forms of learning such as high school or university. The class is free.

May 17, 2010 (7-9pm) – Introduction to Anthropology and Cultural Anthropology

May 31, 2010 (7-9pm) – Introduction to Indigenous Peoples in Canada

June 7, 2010 (7-9pm) – Aboriginal Rights in Canada

June 14, 2010 (7-9pm) – Treaties in Canada

June 21, 2010 (7-9pm) – B.C. and Political Relationships with Indigenous Peoples

Qualifications and Expectations

The class is open and no registration is required. I ask that people commit to attending as many classes as possible.

Classes will run from 7-9pm at the Solstice Café 529 Pandora Avenue, Victoria, BC

Thanks for making unlabel 2010 a success

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

The 4th unlabel fashion happened on Sunday March 21st. We had a great time de-constructing fashion, discussing important issues that face us and of course, re-creating clothing!

This year we had several interactive workshops which included: brooch making, sewing, an interactive media station, and an informative workshop in which we deconstructed popular images found in print media. And we finished with a speak out runway, in which everyone had the opportunity to share what they re-created and anything they learned that day before strutting down the runway. What an empowering way to end a fantastic day with our antidote family!

Photos to follow soon!

A Date With A Senator

Monday, December 14th, 2009

On December 3rd, 2009, antidote: Multiracial and Indigenous Girls and Women’s Network celebrated our recent win for the BC Representative for Children and Youth Award of Excellence.  Hosted by the Dean of Human and Social Development at UVIC, Mary Ellen Purkis and the Director of the School of Child and Youth Care at UVIC, Daniel Scott, we celebrated at the First Peoples House ceremonial hall on campus. Elder Marie Cooper welcomed us into the beautiful space with her kind words of support and wisdom.  In the midst of a beautiful venue we got a chance to accept this award again in the midst of our antidote family.

A special guest, Senator Patrick Brazeau, also accepted our invitation to join us.  It was a pleasure to speak with him and have him recognize and acknowledge the work that we do.  After the ceremony, a few lucky antidote members got a chance to have dinner with the senator, the girls, sistahs and aunties wowed him with this years activities.  It was truly a great event.
